 Edmonton is the fifth largest city in Canada with a census metropolitan area population of 937,845 (based on 2001 census).The name "Edmonton" was chosen to honour the home of Hudson Bay Company Governor James Winter Lake who lived in Edmonton, England.

The University has forged an international reputation in many fields. The Edmonton Federation of Community Leagues was incorporated in 1921 and has grown into the largest volunteer organization in North America .  The 142 leagues provide recreational facilities and programming to the communities they serve.
 Victoria Golf Course is the oldest municipal golf course in Canada, established in 1907. Edmonton is an international leader in waste management and curb-side recycling.
 Edmonton Public Schools offers highly innovative programming with more than 40 educational alternatives to choose from.There are 30 miles of cross-country ski trails in the river valley. 
 Of 25 Alberta and Canadian cities surveyed in 2004, Edmonton’s combined property tax and utility charges ranked the ninth lowest (Edmonton Planning & Development). The official corporate colours of Edmonton are blue and white.  The marigold is the official flower.
